elly beckerman is junior at bates college, where she studies environmental studies, with a concentration in global environmental politics. she also minors in chinese and history. growing up in dc, her early experiences with the environment were generally on summer camping trips with her family. throughout high school, partially through an internship with planet forward, she began to develop a better sense of urban environmental challenges. these days, her education focus on place-based environmental justice issues and understanding and contextualizing environmental issues within the broader geo-socio-political landscape.
after graduation, elly hopes to put the skills she has learned to work tackling urban environmental justice issues, including food systems, land use, and environmental education. in her free time elly captains cold front, the women’s, non-binary, and gender non-conforming ultimate frisbee team at bates, works with local survivors of domestic violence, and enjoys making grilled cheese sandwiches for her friends and teammates on her camp stove.
