the victoria university team from new zealand is the first team from the southern hemisphere to compete in the us department of energy solar decathlon 2011. they will compete in washington dc in september and october against teams from china, belgium, canada and the u.s.
the solar decathlon challenges twenty university teams from around the world to design, build and operate a solar-powered house that is cost effective, energy efficient, and attractive.
the team\'s entry is the meridian first light house - the design is inspired by the classic kiwi bach (pronounced batch) – a new zealand holiday home - where new zealanders retreat to ‘get away from it all’ and get back to basics. the bach inspired house was constructed in wellington, new zealand and transported to washington dc to compete on the world stage.
