hooked on fishing: hains point fishers discuss the regulations surrounding their favorite pastime

hains point is a popular fishing spot along the potomac river with views of the anacostia river from the point. even though there are advisories against consuming fish, many people fish the rivers to feed themselves or provide meals to others. even though some consumption is allowed, trey sherard, the anacostia river-keeper, warns against eating any fish because of the many unknown chemicals contaminating the fish. beyond the debate over whether or not to eat the fish, people in the d.c. area are hooked on fishing for the peace it provides.

naomi ayala is a d.c.-based poet and educator from puerto rico. in her writing, she focuses on social and environmental justice. she hopes to bring awareness to these topics in her work and show the power of poetry. e. ethelbert miller, a self-proclaimed literary activist, writer and close friend of ayala, has encouraged ayala in her work and experienced her passion for the environment. this film features poems by ayala, “food line” and “puerto rico”.
