madison vorva is senior environmental analysis major at pomona college. at 16, she was honored as a united nations “forest hero” for co-leading project orangs, an eight-year campaign to get girl scouts usa to source responsible palm oil in its cookies. partnering with the rainforest action network, the packard foundation and the union of concerned scientists, her middle school project grew to a national media campaign that reached 10 million consumers. in 2011, girl scouts usa announced a palm oil policy and three years later, kellogg's and wilmar (adopted deforestation-free commitments. in college, madi co-hosted “fablab,” a stem (science, technology, engineering and math) education tv show airing nationwide on fox affiliate stations. for her thesis, she worked with esri to explore how geospatial tools and place-based storytelling can be applied for environmental science education. today, madi serves on the board of the jane goodall institute.
