mn2020: clean boats and clean lakes
boating and fishing enthusiasts have seen more enforcement of watercraft hygiene in minnesota lakes this summer. this is due in part to ramped up efforts to crack down on the spread of aquatic invasive species from lake to lake.
the minnesota dnr has 140 watercraft inspection sites and 23 decontamination units at lake access points across the state. many lakes already have some level of contamination, but working together with boaters, the dnr hopes to minimize the further spread of zebra mussels and eurasian watermilfoil, which can wreak havoc on the area ecosystems and limit economic development.
