meet Ángela, a shy but curious girl from quito, ecuador.

in Ángela and the plastic problem, she embarks on a journey to discover what her local community and communities across her country are doing to increase sustainability by combating plastic waste. learning about intiatives in other cities and even going on a trip to the marvelous galápagos islands, she is helped and inspired along the way by her best friend, julia, and her mamá.

Ángela meets new friends like pedro and his mother to continue her exploration of ecuador, facing her fears to discover how community can tackle plastic pollution together.

in this children’s book, youth will hopefully be inspired to take action after learning about what other people are doing to combat plastic waste.

making his environmental mark at 13 //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/making-environmental-mark-13-chicken/ mon, 04 mar 2019 04:53:35 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/making-his-environmental-mark-at-13/ a 13-year-old boy is making his environmental mark by raising 60 chickens in order to sell sustainably-produced eggs.

it’s not every day that an 11 year-old is so impacted by researching the detrimental environmental effects of agribusiness that he decides to save up money from lemonade stands to fund his own small farm. sam tobin is that boy, now a 13-year-old chicken farmer who started his own free-range egg business two years ago in an effort to live more sustainably.  he currently has 60 chickens roaming around his backyard in urban charlotte, n.c., and sells his eggs to local restaurants and neighbors. this is a brief glimpse into a day in his life, loosely inspired by wendell berry’s poem “i go among trees”.

food supplement diy for low income youth //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/food-supplement-diy-for-low-income-youth/ sun, 03 mar 2019 22:42:26 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/food-supplement-diy-for-low-income-youth/ tutorial on how to start an indoor food garden to help give children some access to healthy foods.

in this video i show children the supplies they’ll need to start seedlings in order to help increase families’ food security, even in urban settings. it’s not much, but for low income families’ saving just a few dollars can mean a lot. with more than 16.2 million children in the u.s. not receiving enough nutritious food, teaching families that they can grow lettuce, broccoli, strawberries, or other healthy foods, even in an apartment, could provide a fun family project while also benefiting their children’s health and their wallet!

this topic is important to me because i currently live in syracuse’s 18th ward where the average annal income is about $12,000 a year in in a city where 47% of children live below the poverty line. this means a disproportionate amount of my neighbors’ children are likely the 1 in 5 children that will go hungry at some point during the year.

in addition i also live in a federally designated food desert, and thus it is difficult for myself, even with access to a vehicle, to get access to fresh fruit and vegetables. having personally dealt with the reality of food insecurity i see the necessity for social justice and hope that some of those who’s lives could be affected by the ideas within this story find them, one way or another, and are able to make their lives just a little bit easier by growing a single seed.

from tigger’s to milford house, with love //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/from-tiggers-to-milford-house-with-love/ thu, 21 mar 2013 13:00:02 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/from-tiggers-to-milford-house-with-love/ in 2008 a remarkable relationship was kindled between the children of tigger’s honeypot, a child care centre at the university of new south wales, australia, and the residents of milford house, an aged care facility in sydney’s eastern suburbs. once a fortnight the children pay a visit to their older friends, to paint, sculpt, sing, laugh and share stories.

our video looks at the benefits of bringing together the very young and the very old, and how better planning of our built environment could make for a happier, more healthy living environment for all.
