faisalabad, the third largest city in pakistan, has begun developing 10 biogas plants this november, under the supervision of pakistan domestic biogas programme (pdbp). these plants will have the capacity to hold 50 to 100 meters of biogas and will be used to generate electricity. in the united states, the american biogas council signed a contract with envitec biogas, a german-based company, to begin plant development in new york.

lets make learning about the environment a less dreadful process and lets think about creative ways we can get our point across to different crowds. very few environmental videos i watch make a lasting impression on me, so this was my attempt to make an impression on you. i think its time to explore other ways we can communicate the importance, the possibilities and the beauty of saving the earth. working with mother nature is one of the most pure ways to live your life. how our species decided the earth comes second to our greeds and needs is beyond me. i would be lying if i told you i never littered or left the water running when i brushed my teeth, but i try and thats all we can make people do. i encourage you to make a conscious effort to be a more conservative user as well as explore new resources such as cow manure. before the internet, a bunch of environmentalist activist got together an decided they needed to make a holiday for the earth. they promoted through word of mouth, drawings, posters and any way they could. today we have more way to reach people then ever, we just have to figure out how to use the tools we have. the enviromental revolution these activist started is still in effect today, we are the next generation. this is the first of many enviromental videos, blogs, comedy skits, road-trips and movies to come. stay tuned

going local: the nc 10% campaign //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/going-local-the-nc-10-campaign/ wed, 23 oct 2013 09:59:37 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/going-local-the-nc-10-campaign/ editor’s pick: you might call yourself part of 99 percent or the one percent, but what about joining the 10 percent campaign?

in collaboration with north carolina state university, farmers, businesses and communities are pledging to spend 10 percent of their existing food dollars locally. since july 2010, 6803 people, along with 878 businesses have joined the initiative, spending a total of over $53 million locally.

residents of colorado are also taking a 10 percent pledge: 357 people and 37 businesses spent over $8 million on local food to date. as of september, the illinois stewardship alliance (isa) is kick starting a similar campaign focused on chefs, cooks and restaurant owners. illinois is an agricultural epicenter, yet more than 95 percent of food consumption in the state is imported from distant farms. meanwhile, according to the isa, seven out of ten consumers said they are more likely to go to a restaurant offering locally produced food.

the growing and transportation of mass-produced food is taking a toll on our environment. produce that you buy in your grocery store often travels more than a thousand miles to get there, many times it’s not even in season, and it is picked long before it’s ripe. this begs the question, does your food taste as good as it should, and is it as healthy as it could be? north carolina state university recently started the nc 10% campaign, an initiative to raise awareness about buying local food and to encourage north carolina residents to pledge online to spend more money locally. since its start in 2010, more than $28,000,000 has been spent on local foods, and that’s just from people and businesses who took the online pledge. if more north carolina residents and even more states got on board with this campaign and learned about where their food comes from, the quality of local farm land would improve and local economies would thrive.

editor’s pick: what if the footsteps of a crowd could power a train? or a one-kilometer stretch of roadway in california could produce enough energy to power 30,800 homes a year? we’re talking about piezoelectricity—the transformation of kinetic energy into an electrical current. several countries have already begun experimenting with piezoelectric technology. in 2009, the east japan railway company installed piezoelectric flooring in their tokyo railway station. the energy generated by bustling commuters powers all the displays in the station. italy also plans to place the technology under a stretch of the venice-to-trieste autostrada. in the us, california assemblyman mike gatto (d-los angeles) proposed a bill passed in 2011 to fund research to focus on the large-scale capabilities of this type of energy harvesting. in december 2012, the california energy commission (cec) announced that it would support gatto’s proposal and fund preliminary research.

piezoelectric energy is created by the vibrations, friction, or static between solid materials. this can be obtained through a variety of methods, such as the friction of tires on the road, or the movement of shoes across a surface that contains piezoelectric crystals. this technology was discovered in 1880 by jacques curie, and has been subject to research over the past century as a potential new form of alternative energy. the potential for piezoelectric energy seems endless with modern advances in technology, as it can and has been implemented in a variety of different outlets. for example, it is not uncommon for nightclubs to be powered by dancers in europe, creating energy that powers the entire establishment, from the stereo to the lighting. here in the united states, gyms exist in which stationary exercise equipment possesses this technology in order to power the gym. furthermore, the greatest potential for piezoelectric energy seems to lie in the outlet of highway and road construction. piezoelectric crystals that are placed under these surfaces that experience the vibrations of thousands of vehicles and pedestrians a day have the potential to power entire towns and communities, perhaps even nations and the world. this technology is one of the most up-and-coming in alternative fuel exploration and will most likely be implemented into a variety of technologies in the future.

sustainable solutions through shipping containers //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/sustainable-solutions-through-shipping-containers/ mon, 31 dec 2012 08:48:23 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/sustainable-solutions-through-shipping-containers/ in today’s society, a new and innovative way to reduce the buildup of waste caused from construction is to use shipping containers within architecture. rather than using new materials, virtually any structure, such as homes, dormitories, offices, studios, and farming initiatives can be constructed out of old, unused shipping containers. after these shipping containers have traveled the world and exhausted their purpose, they are left unused on empty shipping docks. anyone can then buy these containers for an affordable price and transform them into architectural structures.

shipping containers can be insulated to fit most climates. this means anyone across the globe can use one and design it to fit his or her needs. this sustainable option has a great deal of room for potential in a wide range of circumstances. our video demonstrates what this green alternative can do for the field, for the classroom, and for the planet.

proper disposal of toxic medical waste //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/proper-disposal-of-toxic-medical-waste/ mon, 24 dec 2012 08:05:42 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/proper-disposal-of-toxic-medical-waste/ medical waste is accumulated extremely quickly due to the fact that most medical supplies are used only once to ensure patient safety. while this practice may safeguard individuals, the ramifications for the environment are less than desirable. medical waste, including bio-hazardous materials, is an ever accumulating pollutant that jeopardizes the health of our planet.

my video introduces innovative ideas that offer possible solutions to help stop illegal and harmful disposal of medical waste. the main innovations introduced in this video submission include reducing the amount of medical supplies used in the operating room (all of it has to be disposed of even if it is not used), reusing medical equipment that can be reused again (linens, robes, etc.), donating “used” medical equipment that is still considered sterile to developing countries, and transforming toxic medical waste into non-toxic recyclable waste by using the chemical chlorine dioxide. by putting these few innovative ideas into action the world will accumulate less toxic waste and the toxic waste it does accumulate will be disposed of properly and efficiently.
