future living: freeville earthship //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/future-living-freeville-earthship/ wed, 05 feb 2020 16:11:09 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/future-living-freeville-earthship/ chad devoe shares his alternative living experience and how it has it can be a solution for the future.

]]>
earthships originated in new mexico and were created by a man named michael reynolds in the 1970’s. reynolds designed the earthship to be self-sustaining in a time like the energy crisis, but has now been recognized as a sustainable way of living as we head into a daunting future.

chad devoe, a high school environmental science teacher, shares his reasoning as to why he chose the earthship and how it can impact, not only his life, but other people’s lives as we head into a future involving the climate crisis. he recognizes some barriers people face when deciding to build green, alternative houses and provides some solutions to overcome these barriers.

helping the homeless with miriam’s kitchen //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/helping-the-homeless-with-miriams-kitchen/ fri, 03 mar 2017 15:47:09 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/helping-the-homeless-with-miriams-kitchen/ soup kitchens traditionally just feed their guests, but miriam's kitchen has taken significant steps in helping the homeless beyond just food.

]]>
miriam’s kitchen was not my idea in the slightest, however it caught my attention immediately when i first heard about the wide variety of resources they offer to the homeless and others in need. as a local soup kitchen that has developed vastly in outreach and available resources over the years, miriam’s deserves some real attention. regardless of where my video goes, they need to and are going places. this was just my way trying to help them get there.

to quote sam stephenson, “miriam’s is on a fast track to stardom”.  if this non-profit gets the momentum it needs, miriam’s kitchen will not only grow, but it will set an example for other soup kitchens all over the world.

tomorrow’s solar communities, today //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/tomorrows-solar-communities-today/ sat, 22 oct 2011 12:13:16 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/tomorrows-solar-communities-today/ environmental prototype homes of tommorrow (ephot inc)a 501c non-profit will buy, rehab, retrofit with co-generating solar systems, on-demand hot water and radiant barrier insulation foreclosed and bank owned properties; then will either hold and rent for 5 yrs depending on demographic or sell the properties back to the general public using the fha 203k loans(1978 carter administration), which gives the buyer the funds to acquire, renovate, and add solar co-generation equipment to the depressed property.

these foreclosed properties that are not only a blight on the communities they are in but a consistant reminder of the economic times we live in. by renovating them and reducing their carbon footprint; we are vertually killing to birds with same stone…providing a renovated home that is helping the locale community turn around while costing less to live in 50 to 75% depending on personal conservation efforts of dwellwers.

by investing in real estate this initiative will always hold more value on paper than any other value added corporation from start-up. this being said we will always own properties worth as much as 50% of the actual appraised value. this will assure that we are in better cash position in case of more downturn in reit’s.
something stockholders as well as board members will appreciate.

hemp oil as a versatile and sustainable construction tool //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/hemp-oil-as-a-versatile-and-sustainable-construction-tool/ mon, 17 jan 2011 12:30:38 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/hemp-oil-as-a-versatile-and-sustainable-construction-tool/ hemp has been uses for thousands of years by mankind and until last century in the united states it was common place. farmers could benefit easily cause it grows like a weed and needs no pesticide or fertilizer. there are many products that could be made from it that would support many new jobs and industries. we have no idea how it fits into our ecosystem because it has been exempt from environmental impact studies from the dea.

farmers in many states are ready to start growing it here in the u.s.. farmers in canada are now growing and profiting from it. here is an example of fiber usage and benefits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb9teck_hy4 hemp oil was replaced with petroleum oil in paints after it was banned in the mid 1930’s. ben franklin use hemp oil based ink. if we are trying to move from petroleum based products hemp is essential. it can be burned as a bio fuel if necessary.

one acre of hemp can save 4.1 acres of trees in fiber production. that statistic is from the usda.

birdseed used to contain 50% hempseed. the birds would eat those first. what impact did this have on bird health and appetite for pests?

here is a video on hempcrete housing. hundreds have been build in europe and studies show the walls actually absorb co2. http://bcove.me/mq4q659c

promote sustainable business practices for large and small companies //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/promote-sustainable-business-practices-for-large-and-small-companies/ tue, 21 dec 2010 08:33:55 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/promote-sustainable-business-practices-for-large-and-small-companies/ habitat for humanity building passive homes as affordable housing //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/habitat-for-humanity-building-passive-homes-as-affordable-housing/ tue, 14 dec 2010 12:55:01 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/habitat-for-humanity-building-passive-homes-as-affordable-housing/ what if we could save more energy and lower the costs of home ownership, simply by constructing them in a smarter way? the habitat for humanity organization is doing just that when constructing their new projects.

habitat for humanity has begun to build “passive houses” across the country in washington d.c., kentucky, and vermont to name a few. what is a passive house? check out this quick video below that explains it:

as the architect in the video, david peabody, emphasizes, “that first cost is worth it when they think of the total cost of ownership, so it’s becoming good business to do it instead of just the right thing.” habitat for humanity has begun building passive houses with just that in mind: the cost of owning a home doesn’t end when you sign the mortgage. low income families often use 40% of their income on energy costs, according to tom digiovanni, head of the passive house alliance in washington, d.c. cutting this cost can be a crucial step that helps more people own homes, as well as stay in those homes once they move in.

it’s past time that we start adopting these energy saving, cost cutting techniques in all of our buildings. and as with most of our country’s energy challenges, there’s no better place to start than at home.
