cdp’s nigel topping: data drives climate action in cities

the carbon disclosure project collects and discloses greenhouse gas emissions data from thousands of organizations around the world, data that can then be used to develop reporting standards and enhance climate-related actions.

in july, c40 released a report developed in partnership with cdp that offered the first-ever public disclosure and analysis of self-reported ghg emissions data from c40 cities.

in this interview, nigel topping, chief innovation officer for cdp, discusses the opportunities for the c40 in relation to measuring carbon emissions. with 72% of the c40’s 58 member cities reporting in the first year of the analysis, topping is optimistic that in subsequent years all of the c40 cities will be able to join in disclosing emissions data to both capture the scope of the issue and to act.

“that rich set of data,” topping says, “can inspire learning and innovation.”

sydney mayor clover moore: blazing a trail in australia

australia is heavily dependent on coal-fired power – “it’s cheap and easy, and to get change is very hard,” sydney lord mayor clover moore told the c40 news team during a gathering of world mayors in sao paulo, brazil. with many government leaders in the country denying climate change, moore said, “it can be a hostile environment for action.”

sydney, which has committed to its sustainable city 2030 plan, is forging ahead in spite of the difficulties and draws knowledge and support from its work with the c40, the mayor said. the city is targeting a 70-percent reduction in emissions by 2030; learn more about the plan here.

jakarta’s deputy governor: poverty and climate change are linked

jakarta is one of the largest cities in southeast asia and one that is grappling with the impacts of climate change on lower-income populations. the city’s poor are often disproportionately affected by catastrophic weather events like floods, the city’s deputy governor, sutanto soehodho, says. jakarta’s government is also concerned that climate change will worsen the economic circumstances and living conditions for those people living on the brink of poverty, potentially pushing them into worse circumstances.
managing the emissions and congestion from the traffic in a city of approximately 10 million people, as well as protecting the population from flooding and other weather events, are top priorities for soehodho. data and best practices from other cities participating in the c40 can help leaders develop and deploy solutions to these complex challenges.

san francisco’s melanie nutter on getting to zero waste
