i spent time with brown-lavoie to get to know the process of bringing life to a garden in an environment that is continuously overlooked as a place for agriculture. it all started with the beginning stages of the seeding process in a makeshift growing box that was located in brown-lavoie’s one bedroom apartment in providence. i took a camera with me to capture the essence of brown-lavoie’s commitment to agriculture and closeness to her food.

weeks later, after rhode island melted its way out of its second snowiest winter on record, brown-lavoie and a few other farmers arrived ready to clean up their planting site on the east side of providence. i was there to capture the first day of preparation at the headquarters of sidewalk ends farm.

situated on a plot of land between the busy streets of providence, sidewalk ends farm breaks the block of cityscape with a lively garden.  this neighborhood garden not only acts as a growing point for the city, it also provides a meeting place for the community to be in touch with the environment and get connected to their food.

this video shows a place where sidewalk meets soil. brown-lavoie represents one of the many urban farmers who overcomes the limits of their surroundings. the video exhibits a greener side to all of the pavement and structure of a cityscape. above all, the package discloses a thriving side of providence that shows it its possible to produce sustainable food that tastes good and enhances the nutritional security of the city as a whole.

local ri maple syrup //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/local-ri-maple-syrup/ fri, 17 apr 2015 19:20:50 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/local-ri-maple-syrup/ ashaway r.i.__ this past winter has been one of the snowiest winter’s to date. it was multiple blizzards that buried the northeast and the people of rhode island went into hibernation.

uncle buck’s sugar house in ashaway, r.i. felt the impact of such a cold and snowy winter.

“we had to use the tractor to shovel the snow so that we could get to some of the trees to tap them,” said uncle buck.

uncle buck’s maple trees had a tough winter. he usually taps his trees in late january or early february. this season he couldn’t tap a tree until march 6th. it was this late start that really changed how buck does his business.

normally bringing in well over 65 gallons of sap a year, this year he was only able to bring in just under 60 gallons. he had a loss of about 8% of his business because of this harsh winter.

buck is optimistic about next winter though hoping to get some more equipment so that he can have 100 more taps next season.

“that first winter in 1997 was a cold one watching water boil on the back deck for only one gallon of sap, but my business has grown every year since then,” said uncle buck

how climate change is choking marine ecosystems //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/how-climate-change-is-choking-marine-ecosystems/ mon, 18 jul 2011 14:00:06 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/how-climate-change-is-choking-marine-ecosystems/ while investigating the effects of climate change on nitrogen cycling in temperate coastal systems, rhode island researchers made the first scientific link between warming and fundamental changes in nutrient cycles. researchers found that the observed estuary shifted from acting as a nitrogen filter to acting as a nitrogen source—which has a profoundly negative impact on marine ecological systems. previously, when denitrification (removal of nitrogen) dominated the cycle, coastal marine sediments cleansed the water of excess nitrogen. when nitrogen fixation, the process of converting nitrogen into a biologically usable form of nitrogen (such as ammonium or nitrate), dominated the cycle, more nitrogen was brought into the system. researchers discovered that the sediments added more than 1.5 times the amount of nitrogen from the land and atmosphere combined. if this process is happening in other places, the sediments can produce large amounts of nitrogen, which could have significant consequences for offshore systems. the investigator who led the research is now examining nitrogen cycling in the louisiana wetlands to determine whether similar conditions exist.
