editor’s note: for throwback thursday, and in preparation for next friday’s urban agriculture symposium at the george washington university, we’re highlighting this piece about dc rooftop farming company up top acres. farm director kristof grina, featured here, is one of the symposium panelists.

in 2009, three d.c. locals started a rooftop farming company to better their community. unlike rooftop gardens, these full-fledged farms provide a much bigger impact on the local food environment.

i spoke to one of love and carrots’ gardeners, leigh prezkop, and asked her both about what love and carrots does and how they plan on impacting urban sustainability. the company is a for-profit business that helps transform dc area properties into beautiful produce and herb gardens. they work with yards as well as creating rooftop gardens and gardens for restaurants.

rooftop roots is a local d.c. organization that gives food to residents and visitors at local food banks. their goal is to reinvest in the local food chain and reconnect people to their food, by harvesting community gardens. they serve hundreds in the community and are a growing empire of local, delicious food. encouraging a strong community is a priority to creating sustainable cities, and the people in d.c. and virginia benefit from their hard work. danielle baglivo and sophie martin also helped with this project.
