hurricanes have cost florida 3.5 billion dollars annually in recent years. with rising oceans and 80% of the population living near the coast these numbers are only expected to worsen. can we afford inaction?

growing up in memphis i remember going into the halls of my elementary school, sitting on the floor and facing the walls. i remember going into a closet in my house when the sirens starting going off. i was fortunate enough to never know true damage done by the tornados i was sheltering from.

many americans and other people around the world are not as fortunate as most of are. people lose their businesses, their houses, and their possessions. cost of damage is increasing every year as the severity of these storms grows.

over the past few decades we have seen natural disasters hit frequently. while this is not something new or novel, the severity and damage caused by these disasters is. five of the top 6 costliest atlantic hurricanes ever occurred in the past 10 years:

but this isn’t the most alarming of the statistics. 1,833 people died in hurricane katrina and the flooding surrounding it. 138 died in hurricane sandy. 195 dead from ike, 62 from wilma, and 121 from ivan. that is 2,349 deaths claimed from five hurricanes.

last fall, typhoon haiyan hit the phillipines. in the phillipines alone, the death toll was over 6000.

can we afford this type damage? what should we be doing to prevent or prepare for disasters like this? sound off in the comments.

natural disaster protection for infrastructure //www.getitdoneaz.com/story/natural-disaster-protection-for-infrastructure/ sun, 01 jul 2012 07:00:10 +0000 http://dpetrov.2create.studio/planet/wordpress/natural-disaster-protection-for-infrastructure/ natural disasters can evoke detrimental damage to infrastructure with untold human casualties. according to the asian disaster reduction center, the frequency and relative ferocity of natural disasters on a global scale has increased, leading to rising costs in damages rendered to society. additionally, due to the need to secure a greater supply of “stored” natural energy, hydraulic fracturing has become a major source of concern with regard to contributing to the potential for seismic activity.

this idea is based on protecting infrastructure from deluge associated with tsunami waves, typhoons/hurricanes, and earthquakes. a few engineering innovations that would better protect buildings include the use of hydraulic ratcheting to raise the building from the foundation during earthquakes, nano building materials that keep structural integrity whilst releasing material stresses to enable swaying and shock, and rising scaffolding from the ground up to protect buildings from flooding/waves. additionally, an automated system would be keyed into vibrations beneath the building (or city center if constructed as a complex) as well as to reports of potential natural disasters on the way. such smart  buildings are capable of protecting themselves and their occupants from weather-related disasters including torrential flooding, hurricanes, and anything else nature can muster.
