from tigger’s to milford house, with love

in 2008 a remarkable relationship was kindled between the children of tigger’s honeypot, a child care centre at the university of new south wales, australia, and the residents of milford house, an aged care facility in sydney’s eastern suburbs. once a fortnight the children pay a visit to their older friends, to paint, sculpt, sing, laugh and share stories.

our video looks at the benefits of bringing together the very young and the very old, and how better planning of our built environment could make for a happier, more healthy living environment for all.

urban agriculture of the community kind is on the rise, but university of new south wales research suggests the health benefits go way beyond what ends up on the dinner table. these benefits include a better sense of community, more physical activity for participants, and countless advantages for sustaining the environment. local food production makes a lot of sense from an environmental view, and these local systems can also provide food for future generations if the gardens are maintained. it’s all about engaging community residents in the projects and sustaining growth for the future–not only with the plants and flowers but with the participation of friends and neighbors.

how we use urban land is shaping up as one of the biggest dilemmas of the 21st century. a booming population needs to be housed, but it also needs to be fed, and the cost of relying on imported food is already being felt.by 2050 more than twice as many of us will be living in cities.

while urban agriculture of the community kind is on the rise, commercial urban farms are under threat. policy makers can make it easier to maintain peri-urban agriculture and encourage community initiative such as the sustainability street community garden outlined in this video.

salt-free farming

unsw’s associate professor greg leslie has developed new technology that could offer new hope to farmers in drought-affected and marginal areas by enabling crops to grow using salty water.

the new technology uses reverse osmosis membranes to filter salty water and direct the water directly to the plants’ roots without damaging the crops.

green steel

so-called “green steel”, developed by professor veena sahajwalla, involves making steel out of waste materials such as plastic bags and car tires. the unique technology reduces reliance on coke and coal in electric arc furnace (eaf) steel-making.

the “green steel” project created the ability to recycle waste plastics and waste rubber for making steel. in the process itself, it has shown that the steel making process can also become more energy efficient which lowers electricity consumption. this makes it a win-win when it comes to recycling waste materials and energy consumption in the steel making process.
