team first light from victoria university of wellington in new zealand travelled thousands of miles to present their solar house, based on a traditional kiwi holiday home. bede robertson and nick officer, two of the 26 students involved in the project describe this incredibly unique house that is full equipped with solar panels that converted solar energy into electricity within the house, an innovative water system and a dryer that operates with water.

first light: how the house works

the team has developed some new technologies to make the first light house more efficient. clothes dryers are typically the second-biggest electricity-using appliance after the refrigerator in a home. we developed a new, more efficient way to dry your clothes.

we’ve also examined the way the house is heated and cooled and implemented an innovative energy monitoring system so that you can keep track of where energy is being used in the home.
