{"id":30701,"date":"2023-05-24t17:00:13","date_gmt":"2023-05-24t17:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/?page_id=30701"},"modified":"2023-05-24t17:00:14","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24t17:00:14","slug":"california-ag-tackling-food-waste","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/california-ag-tackling-food-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"california ag: tackling food waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='acf-gut-block'>\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article article--collection top-padded-section js-article-border \">\n\t<div class=\"shell\">\n\t\t<div class=\"image-header-grid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"article__container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"article__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1>california ag: tackling food waste<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>in late summer 2018, 11 students from 11 different universities\u00a0traveled with planet forward to woodland, california, for a storytelling expedition about food waste reduction.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.article__content -->\n\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.article__container -->\n\t\t\t<div class=\"article__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"article__thumb\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"article__image image-fit\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/catripweb1800x1200.jpg\" alt=\"california ag: tackling food waste\">\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.article__image image-fit -->\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"ab-top\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"ab-right\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"ab-bottom\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"ab-left\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.article__thumb -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.article__wrapper -->\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shell\">\n\t<div class=\"section__content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"page\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"page__entry\">\n\t\t\t\t<div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class='acf-gut-block'><section class=\"universal-wrapper layout-medium\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<p>you may have heard the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/save-food\/resources\/keyfindings\/en\/\">food and agriculture organization<\/a>&nbsp;statistic that roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year \u2014 approximately 1.3 billion tons \u2014 gets lost or wasted. but did you know the&nbsp;fao also reports that fruits and vegetables have the highest waste rates of any food? or that consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food as the entire net food production of sub-saharan africa?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>it&#8217;s obvious that if&nbsp;we want to feed the planet, we need to find solutions to food waste in every step of the food production process, from grower to consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on this trip, planet forward students visited a tomato production plant, a research farm, and a university market garden and biodigester. we&nbsp;focused more on the production and retail level of food waste reduction since we, as consumers, have more control over our own food usage or waste. but when it comes to big \u2014&nbsp;and small \u2014&nbsp;agriculture? we wanted to learn, and share, what the industry is doing in this area \u2014 and give the planet forward audience an inside look at the industry that is feeding the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so why tomatoes? tomatoes are a $1.05 billion industry in california and was&nbsp;one of the top-10 producing commodities of 2017,&nbsp;according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/statistics\/\">california department of food and agriculture<\/a>&nbsp;(cdfa).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>connecting the dots from seed to can of tomatoes, was one of our goals. (hint: it involves a lot of people!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in a recent press release,&nbsp;cdfa&nbsp;secretary karen ross said, \u201cthroughout california we have amazing stories of local farmers and ranchers using innovation and technology to increase their connection to consumers. &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;farm to fork has engaged consumers like never before&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>we learned this desire&nbsp;to discover&nbsp;where our food comes from, and&nbsp;consumer demand&nbsp;for specific products and types of products, has a powerful impact on what seeds are developed each season, what is grown, and where these food items eventually are sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the&nbsp;stories&nbsp;from our trip are told by students with diverse backgrounds \u2014 some who had never even been to california, let alone on a large-scale production farm. and we cover everything from the challenges of sustainable food production and&nbsp;food waste reduction in communities to improving ag
