(photos by arianna dunham\/gwu)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>chapman is proud of his waterfront home, which he bought as a \u201cfixer-upper\u201d in 1998 after the cottage survived double northeasters and was left with enough damage for the previous owner to put the house on the market for a bargain price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>chapman hasn\u2019t stopped repairing and protecting his home from flood damage since. with sea levels rising, land sinking and more extreme weather patterns, residents like chapman and their homes are at more risk than ever before.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"365\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/u30659\/_mg_9902.jpg\" \/><figcaption>rip rap rock used to buffer the coast surrounding chapman&#8217;s and his neighbors&#8217;
