{"id":13123,"date":"2014-04-14t10:27:15","date_gmt":"2014-04-14t10:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dpetrov.2create.studio\/planet\/wordpress\/gmos-hungry-for-an-answer\/"},"modified":"2014-04-14t10:27:15","modified_gmt":"2014-04-14t10:27:15","slug":"gmos-hungry-for-an-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/gmos-hungry-for-an-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"gmos: hungry for an answer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n390,599,603.<\/p>\n<p>that number is the amount of corn the united states is on track to produce this year in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/adoption-of-genetically-engineered-crops-in-the-us.aspx#.uor_njflnn1\">tons<\/a>.&nbsp; so that means for every man, woman and child in the united states, they can have 2600 <strong>pounds<\/strong> of corn to themselves this year.&nbsp; it\u2019s used for an incredible amount of things in this country: food for people, livestock, fuel for cars, hundreds of plant-based products, etc.<\/p>\n<p>the only thing more incredible than the sheer number is the percentage of that seed which is genetically modified.&nbsp; while the europe union has <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/food\/biotechnology\/gmo_ban_cultivation_en.htm\">effectively banned<\/a> gmo seed and crops, the united states has wholly embraced it.&nbsp; 88 percent of our crops are now genetically modified, with corn taking the lead as our principle crop.&nbsp; this is up from less than 10 percent only 20 years ago.&nbsp; is it a coincidence that we\u2019ve seen an increase in food production by 120 percent in that same time frame?<\/p>\n<p>now yes, there are a lot of controversies around gmo crops and seed these days.&nbsp; everything from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/morningagriculture\/0414\/morningagriculture13474.html\">regulation<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/tom-philpott\/2013\/10\/would-gmo-labeling-jack-food-prices\">pricing concerns<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/gmo-health-risks-what-scientific-evidence-says-1161099\">health issues<\/a> has kept people hesitant to embrace these engineered foods.&nbsp; but with the global population skyrocketing, the increased yields of these seeds might be hard to ignore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>is it fair to debate our concerns about gmos while people in the developing world need food desperately?
