neil chambers is the founder and ceo of chambers design, inc., and author of urban green: architecture for the future. the book is about restoring the natural world in a way that benefits both humans and the environment. he argues that the future of architecture relies on looking to the earth’s past to teach us a more sustainable way to grow as a society.<\/p>\n
in this clip, chambers discusses a project in myrtle beach, south carolina where they are restoring a polluted estuary by reintroducing oysters that he says can \u201cfilter four gallons of water per hour.\u201d in it, he\u00a0claimed that 100,000 oysters could clean the water column every day.<\/p>\n
this idea falls into the category of restoration ecology, or restoring ecosystems in a way that will benefit the natural environment. in the case of oysters, you can clean the water in an area without building costly\u00a0infrastructure. if done right, the oysters will maintain themselves and don’t have to be maintained like man-made\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0does.\u00a0programs to use oysters to clean water are being discussed in many places across the country, including the\u00a0hudson-raritan estuary<\/a>\u00a0in new york\/new jersey,\u00a0wilson bay<\/a>\u00a0in north carolina, and\u00a0a project on virginia’s coastline<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n in this piece, chambers makes an important point about choosing between infrastructure and ecological restoration. while\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0technology often has a relatively short track record, ecological changes can restore natural systems that have worked for thousands of years. in essence, you are allowing nature to complete the process that it was designed to execute, which results in drinkable water, breathable air, and fertile land for all of us.<\/p>\n other examples of high-profile ecological restoration projects are the efforts to\u00a0restore the wetlands in louisiana<\/a> to help prevent the type of flooding that was seen during hurricane katrina, replant the forests in places like the\u00a0philippines<\/a>, and to attempt to aid\u00a0soil restoration in the red rock canyon state park<\/a> in the mojave desert.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" replace your water filter…with oysters? see how some communities are letting nature do their dirty work. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8506,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4905,4893,4900,4904],"tags":[],"storyfest_categories":[],"class_list":["post-13577","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-adaptation","category-architecture","category-green-living","category-water"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
