{"id":14303,"date":"2010-07-08t19:30:00","date_gmt":"2010-07-08t19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dpetrov.2create.studio\/planet\/wordpress\/visiting-an-anaerobic-methane-digester\/"},"modified":"2010-07-08t19:30:00","modified_gmt":"2010-07-08t19:30:00","slug":"visiting-an-anaerobic-methane-digester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/visiting-an-anaerobic-methane-digester\/","title":{"rendered":"visiting an anaerobic methane digester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">last week <a href=\"http:\/\/community.planetforward.org\/video\/a-look-inside-anaerobic\">i visited an anaerobic methane digester<\/a> in skagit county, washington. the plant, owned by kevin maas and his brother of farm<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">power northwest, produces 750 kilowatts of electricty, enough to power 500 homes and accounts for 0.5% percent of the county&#8217;s total electricity usage.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/19-cimg0796sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\nthis plant maintains a very important and mutually beneficial partnership with nearby dairy farmers. manure is collected from dairy farms in a pit nearby the digester.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/20-cimg0792small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">the manure is then processed and the gas is burned to power a generator, which produces electricity.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/21-cimg0813sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">the leftover manure is separated into liquids and solids. the liquids are sent back to the dairy farms to use as fertilizer. the solids are turned into cow bedding, which saves the farmers over $100,000 dollars in sawdust costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/22-cimg0822small.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">this relationship helps keep dairy farmers in western washington, an area that has already seen the industry decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/23-cimg0803sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">despite the benefit to the local community and little environmental impact, anaerobic methane digesters are not a common technology. there are currently only four in the state of washington, with a fifth under construction.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">constructing a digester is what maas calls a &#8220;horrible development process&#8221; that can take years. there is a lot of money that needs to be invested before construction can begin. farmers usually do not have the time or money to develop the digesters themselves, which means it is usually up to third-party developers like maas, and even then it is difficult.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">maas&#8217; plant was partially funded by grants, but still took 2 and a half years of development before it became profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blogs\/24-cimg0834sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">despite the strenuous and lengthy development process, maas <a href=\"http:\/\/community.planetforward.org\/video\/manure-to-energy\">believes there is a future<\/a> for this technology. it is a unique technology in which nothing is lost in the process. farmers receive fertilizer and cow-bedding and the digester receives electricity to power hundreds of homes. &#8220;it&#8217;s a great deal,&#8221;
