{"id":27138,"date":"2023-01-26t15:42:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-26t15:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.planetforward.com\/2023\/01\/26\/an-ancient-building-material-could-be-the-wave-of-the-future\/"},"modified":"2023-02-24t16:58:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24t16:58:38","slug":"mass-timber-building-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/mass-timber-building-material\/","title":{"rendered":"an ancient building material could be the wave of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><strong>this story was originally published in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/greatlakesecho.org\/2022\/10\/28\/an-ancient-building-material-could-be-the-wave-of-the-future\/\">great lakes echo<\/a>&nbsp;on october 28th, 2022.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>michigan businesses interested in reducing their carbon footprint are looking to build with large wooden panels instead of steel or concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>nationwide, demand for what is called&nbsp;&#8220;mass timber&#8221;&nbsp;tripled between 2018 and 2021, according to&nbsp;sandra lupien, director of masstimber@msu,&nbsp;a research and education group promoting mass timber in the great lakes region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>there are different kinds of mass timber, but the term refers to multiple wood panels either nailed or glued together and that are strong enough to replace concrete and steel, which contribute 8% to greenhouse gas emissions,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k5cvhhunpko&amp;t=255s\">according to canadian architect&nbsp;<\/a>michael green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>mass timber is more sustainable, green said in a 2013 teded talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>nearly half of america\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions come from the building industry. since a little more than a cubic yard of wood can store one ton \u2013 about the weight of the liberty bell\u2013 of carbon dioxide, mass timber is a great way to reduce our footprint, said&nbsp;lupien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>half of the weight of a tree is from stored carbon in its wood, and the rest is water, oxygen, hydrogen and a mix of other elements. in other words, wood is a carbon sink. building with it can prevent or delay carbon from being released into the atmosphere when a tree dies or burns, lupien said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">building a better future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>last year, michigan state university opened&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/news\/msu-mass-timber-stem-facility-wins-forest-stewardship-council-leadership-award\">one of the first mass timber buildings<\/a>&nbsp;in michigan. already there are two more mass timber projects underway in the state, one at a k-12 school in kalamazoo and another at the great lakes boat building school in cedarville.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cam cass image 1.jpeg\" alt=\"the interior of a building where large wooden beams frame rectangular glass windows.\" width=\"294\" height=\"392\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">mass timber advocates hope that<br>michigan state\u2019s stem teaching<br>and learning facility will be a<br>place where contractors can learn<br>to build with the more \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bsustainable<br>alternative. (cameryn cass)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>another 27 projects in michigan are on the drawing board plan to incorporate mass timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at minimum, the building in cedarville will have a roof made of mass timber, though those involved with its construction are hopeful to build the whole building out of it, said nikki storey, the president of the great lakes boat building school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the only thing stopping them is funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthat\u2019s part of the problem with mass timber: i don\u2019t know that the economy of scales exists yet to be able to get good pricing on it,\u201d storey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>since mass timber comes in sheets that are easy to put together \u2013 lupien equated it to building with lincoln logs \u2013 its use can save builders a lot of time. but since there are no mass timber manufacturers in michigan \u2013 the closest is outside of chicago \u2013 it\u2019s not always easy to obtain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>typically, mass timber products are made from softwood trees, such as&nbsp;coniferous trees like evergreens,&nbsp;which make up 30% of michigan\u2019s forests. the remaining majority of michigan trees are hardwood, meaning they\u2019re deciduous and lose their leaves, lupien said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>researchers at michigan tech university are experimenting with making mass timber out of hardwood instead, a niche that might provide economic opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">an untapped opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cmichigan is a forestry state,\u201d said conan smith, the president of the michigan environmental council. \u201cif we can advance the construction materials that are rooted in wood, it\u2019s to our economic benefit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cit\u2019s not just a great environmental opportunity, it\u2019s a great economic opportunity for the state of michigan,\u201d smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>each year, the state removes 30% to 40% of the forest\u2019s growth,&#8221; said brenda haskill, a forest marketing and outreach specialist at michigan\u2019s department of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that still provides enough capacity to harvest for mass timber and manage forests sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cwe\u2019re at a really interesting place in terms of moving the forest industry forward,\u201d haskill said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>talks of attracting a mass timber manufacturer to michigan are underway. however, an aging workforce and the rising cost of diesel fuel mean a decline in logging firms, haskill said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>according to haskill, making sure there are enough&nbsp;loggers to harvest trees and get them to the mill is really the biggest concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201ci\u2019m hopeful, but there\u2019s a lot of pieces that need to be addressed,\u201d haskill said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cam-cass-3-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27521\" width=\"318\" height=\"424\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">michigan state university revamped a power plant and added two mass timber wings to create a hybrid structure. (cameryn cass)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>michigan is in the same boat as the other midwestern states; there\u2019s more mass timber manufacturing and interest out west, haskill said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>another challenge is michigan\u2019s outdated building codes, said brian craig, the board chair at the michigan forest biomaterials institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the most recent version of the international building code is from 2021 and offers more flexibility and clarity for how high you can build and how much wood can be exposed with mass timber, craig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>right now, michigan follows 2015 codes, making it two cycles behind the current thinking on mass timber and fire safety, craig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but mass timber doesn\u2019t behave like a 2 x 4; instead, it behaves like a tree. think of an unsplit log in a fire pit, and how it chars on the outside: that\u2019s what mass timber would do in a fire, lupien said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>craig said that timber can be even safer than steel when it burns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthink about what happens when steel gets hot. it sort of turns into spaghetti, whereas mass timber\u2019s surface chars and then protects the rest of the timber,\u201d craig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lupien said that even with the outdated building codes, builders in michigan are still able to use mass timber, and they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">where sustainability meets beauty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>people using the buildings \u2013 at least the one on michigan state\u2019s campus\u2013 express the aesthetic benefits of bringing nature indoors, lupien said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthere\u2019s actually a word for that. it\u2019s called biophilia,\u201d lupien said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that\u2019s a greek word that translates to \u201clove of life.\u201d it taps into our inborn desires of being close to nature. biophilic design \u2013 like incorporating wood into buildings \u2013 has even been found to promote human wellness and productivity, according to the natural resources defense council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>putting the more sustainable, attractive alternative into michigan buildings is a question of price and supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cit\u2019s been used in europe for better than a decade now,\u201d smith said. \u201cit\u2019s a product that\u2019s far better for the planet than concrete.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cwhy we\u2019re not using it more, i don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>mass timber, or large wooden panels, are increasingly recognized as a safe and sustainable building material in michigan&nbsp;and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11744,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5034],"tags":[],"storyfest_categories":[],"class_list":["post-27138","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-storyfest-2023"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- this site is optimized with the yoast seo plugin v23.4 -
