{"id":27801,"date":"2023-03-07t20:14:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-07t20:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/?p=27801"},"modified":"2023-03-20t18:20:49","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20t18:20:49","slug":"revival-in-a-refuge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/revival-in-a-refuge\/","title":{"rendered":"revival in a refuge: a 55-year labor of love"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>since 1970, north america\u2019s bird population has declined by three billion individuals. wetlands were among the last safe havens for birds, with populations increasing in these ecosystems. nevertheless, more than 10% of the total wetland area across the u.s. dried up between 1970 and 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/harrison-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27803\" width=\"283\" height=\"335\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>this makes modest work carried out by stewards like winifred spar and the friends of roger\u2019s wildlife refuge immensely valuable. the friends of roger\u2019s refuge have tended to princeton, new jersey\u2019s preserved marsh less than a mile away from the town\u2019s pre-eminent campus for the last 55 years. they\u2019ve built and reinforced bridges and towers, hacked away at invasive plant species and replanted natives in their place, cleaned trash, and advocated for the continued protection of roger\u2019s wildlife refuge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the refuge has long been considered the premier site for birding across the state of new jersey, but these days it doubles as an active site for wildlife education to outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. as bird populations rebound in the refuge, visitors, new and old, marvel at the sights and sounds long absent in the marsh. the friends of rogers wildlife refuge\u2019s work demonstrates that a powerful solution to otherwise intractable issues is focusing on the wild spaces closest to home and encouraging our neighbors to do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='acf-gut-block'><section class=\"cta-buttons layout-center\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/preview.shorthand.com\/rt4rvwnb2ci9e3ia\" class=\"btn btn--lightblue single-cta \" target=\"\">read the story here!<\/a>\n\t<\/section><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>this photo essay explores the conservation accomplishments of the friends of roger\u2019s wildlife refuge, a new jersey wetlands preserve home  to birds and loved by birders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9389,"featured_media":27802,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4935],"tags":[732,4528,5199],"storyfest_categories":[],"class_list":["post-27801","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-conservation","tag-birds","tag-photo-essay","tag-refuge"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- this site is optimized with the yoast seo plugin v23.4 -
