{"id":42743,"date":"2024-10-17t16:20:12","date_gmt":"2024-10-17t16:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/?p=42743"},"modified":"2024-10-17t16:20:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17t16:20:14","slug":"freshwater-mussel-hatchery-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/freshwater-mussel-hatchery-philadelphia\/","title":{"rendered":"filter with finesse: freshwater mussel innovations in philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">along the banks of the schuylkill river, a major water source for the city of philadelphia, the country\u2019s first city-owned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xerces.org\/endangered-species\/freshwater-mussels\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freshwater mussel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hatchery has recently opened in part of a larger effort to revitalize rivers across the delaware and susquehanna river basins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">north america has the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/2023-05\/freshwater-mussels-and-fish-timeless-love-affair#:~:text=guardians%20of%20the%20waterways,partnership%20for%20the%20delaware%20estuary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of freshwater mussels in the world, with almost 300 different species. also known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/2024-04\/mussels-muscles-healthy-waterway#:~:text=did%20you%20know%20that%20a,water%20quality%20in%20their%20environments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver of the river<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d freshwater mussels filter and protect aquatic ecosystems. despite being able to filter between eight and 15 gallons of water per day, mussels face a myriad of threats including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/molluskconservation.org\/mussels\/threats.html#:~:text=by%20slowing%20the%20velocity%20of,movement%20of%20the%20host%20fish.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrial development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which affected these populations as factories popped up along the schuylkill river during the industrial revolution.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"800\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/48958674107_a8235f9a46_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42767\" style=\"width:269px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">freshwater mussels. (bureau of land management\/cc by 2.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at its worst, philadelphians said the river <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terrain.org\/2024\/nonfiction\/schuykill-river-report\/#:~:text=in%201898%2c%20pollution%20of%20the,already%20visible%20and%20killing%20vegetation.&amp;text=by%201945%2c%20sediment%20had%20clogged,said%20it%20hardly%20resembled%20water.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not even resemble water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. now, scientists at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountwaterworks.org\/visit\/freshwater-mussel-hatchery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fairmount water works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fww) freshwater mussel hatchery are working tirelessly to create a space where visitors can learn firsthand about the life of a freshwater mussel and how cleaner river water depends on one of the most imperiled aquatic animals in north america.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2017, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/water.phila.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">philadelphia water department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teamed up with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/delawareestuary.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnership for the delaware estuary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open the hatchery, which is free to the public, and located within the fww interpretive center. the hatchery was designed and imagined by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ansp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academy of natural sciences at drexel university<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, victoria prizzia of habith\u00e9que, inc., and artist stacy levy. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">introducing philadelphians to the power of the mussel<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"807\" height=\"1159\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42768\" style=\"width:271px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">the freshwater 400;\">the hatchery sits along the schuylkill river, which provides <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anspblog.org\/where-does-your-drinking-water-come-from\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of philadelphians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with drinking water, with the other 60% being provided by the delaware river. the location of the hatchery, along with preserving pieces of architecture from the original waterworks building are all intentional. according to stacey heffernan, the environmental education planner, \u201cmussels are the gateway animal to get people to care for the waterways.\u201d the hatchery\u2019s proximity to the schuylkill, one of philadelphia\u2019s most iconic green spaces, places it in a culturally significant and emotionally resonant site for many locals.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in addition to this, the hatchery also runs educational programs for philadelphia youth. four schools from the surrounding area participate in the \u201cmussels in the classroom\u201d program. this provides teachers with their classroom\u2019s own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckimcreed.com\/news-and-insights\/farming-of-the-future-recirculating-aquaculture-systems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recirculating aquaculture system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and some juvenile mussels. with this, students are able to engage first-hand with measuring mussels and monitoring water quality.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the hatchery also runs a \u201cmussels in the field\u201d program located at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryphila.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audubon discovery center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provides youth from six nearby school districts with similar hands-on interactions, as well as introduces students to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mde.maryland.gov\/programs\/air\/climatechange\/documents\/what%20is%20green%20and%20blue%20infrastructure.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blue-green infrastructure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. once a month, the discovery center also hosts \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pa.audubon.org\/events\/mussels-maniacs-discovery-center-philadelphia-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mussel maniacs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d where adults can participate in similar field work and connect with other conservation enthusiasts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">rebuilding a population of workhorse filterers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since the hatchery opened in 2017, they have consistently propagated around 10,000 mussels each year. the fww mussel hatchery strays away from what these types of aquatic field stations often aim to do, which is to focus on restoring endangered native populations. instead, the hatchery is working to build up common species that once thrived in the schuylkill prior to industrial development, which could lead in local efforts to purify water sources for philadelphians.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the wild, mussels have a few main ways of propagating, but scientists in the hatchery lab do these manually. this past year, the hatchery achieved a new personal record of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountwaterworks.org\/blog\/2024\/05\/propagation-innovations-at-the-fwwic-mussel-hatchery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest number of successful propagations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 20,000 mussels. so far this year, the hatchery more than doubled their yearly propagation numbers with just two inoculation trials. they also performed their first study to determine the rate at which two species of freshwater mussels could remove pollutants.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looking ahead, the results will be used to determine how mussels can work as a complement to traditional pollution control technologies. with all these new milestones, heffernan says, \u201cwe have made a lot
