{"id":43403,"date":"2024-11-14t22:01:56","date_gmt":"2024-11-14t22:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/?p=43403"},"modified":"2024-11-14t22:27:25","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14t22:27:25","slug":"the-loop-clothing-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/story\/the-loop-clothing-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"the loop: gw&#8217;s sustainable and affordable clothing exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>tucked away in the basement of a brick building on george washington university\u2019s mount vernon campus, lives the loop, a free clothing exchange that <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.gwu.edu\/loop\">opened<\/a> this semester.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the loop, run by sustainable gw, is open weekly on fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in academic building room 122. the exchange&nbsp;includes clothing, shoes, and accessories donated by gw community members, and free to the&nbsp;community. sofia tjia, an intern at sustainable gw, said the loop&#8217;s goal is to make sure students on campus have access to clothes they need and to teach students to be more mindful about their consumption habits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"830\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43412\" style=\"width:544px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">the loop sign hanging on the northernmost wall of the room. (sofia tjia)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>tjia said the loop started as a \u201crandom room\u201d but was turned into a store by another intern who thrifted furniture and other decorations to create a space. besides the clothes, the addition of comfortable couches and trendy music playing in the background makes the clothing exchange a hang-out space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cwe wanted it to be a fun place people can get the clothes they need,\u201d tjia said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">accessing the loop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>the loop is located on gw\u2019s mount vernon campus, a 15-minute shuttle ride away from the main foggy bottom campus. tjia said she has spoken with customers who live on the foggy bottom campus who&nbsp;make the journey over to mount vernon simply for the loop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cit\u2019s so cute people plan to go to the vern just to come to the loop,\u201d tjia said. \u201cit\u2019s really heartwarming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>tjia said the loop\u2019s grand opening day held on aug. 30 was \u201cvery busy,\u201d but what keeps the \u201cmomentum\u201d of community members coming back to the loop is making it clear the clothes available change \u201cvery often\u201d since they get new donations every week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in the two weeks leading up to halloween, tjia said the loop also created specific racks with customers so community members could get affordable and sustainable costumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">limiting over-consumption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>even though everything at the loop is free, customers are not required to exchange clothes but tjia said they \u201cencourage\u201d an exchange. tjia said she tells community members to be \u201cmindful\u201d about overconsuming even second-hand clothes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthe hype of everything being free at the loop can sometimes overshadow the fact we still do not want you to overconsume,\u201d tjia said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1098\" height=\"1406\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43411\" style=\"width:457px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">clothes, including collared shirts and dress pants, hanging on racks for students to take. (sofia tjia)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>she also said the loop is trying to draft a \u201cpolicy\u201d that discourages the over-consumption of clothes. she said the main goal of the loop is for community members to find clothes that make them happy and that they will bring back to their wardrobe and wear consistently.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">keeping clothes out of the landfill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>since the opening of the loop, tjia said she has helped divert almost 2,000 items from landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>according to gw\u2019s office of sustainability, they receive more than 25,000 pounds worth of clothing donations per year. before the loop, these went only to their community partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>these community partners include bread for the city, which <a href=\"https:\/\/breadforthecity.org\/about\/\">provides<\/a> clothing and other services to low-income residents in the district, and love and light, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lovelightnonprofit\/\">helps<\/a> veteran and military families in woodstock, va., among others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>engagement associate at the office for sustainability juliana carvalho manages the loop along with other programs related to engagement and outreach on gw\u2019s campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>according to carvalho, she helped create the loop thanks to several students who had the idea of creating a permanent thrift store rather than occasional pop-ups, and receiving a \u201csurplus\u201d of donations through bins located around gw\u2019s campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she said the loop receives clothes their community partners do not want, such as bulk sorority shirts. carvalho said the more \u201cinteresting\u201d items they have received are a canvas tote bag with approximately 55 plushies sewn onto it, which was adopted by a patron in the first few minutes after the loop\u2019s grand opening, and tall platform neon gym shoes which are still looking for a home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1104\" height=\"1468\" src=\"\/\/www.getitdoneaz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43410\" style=\"width:441px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">one of the more interesting pieces the loop has given away is a canvas tote bag with plushies sewn onto it. (sofia tjia)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">affordable clothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>besides the sustainability aspect, she said the loop is also addressing the needs of the gw community by providing affordable clothes students might need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthere are certain kinds of clothing that college students might be looking for that are particularly expensive, like business casual clothing, for example, clothing for their internships and summer jobs,\u201d carvalho said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she said the loop makes sure students in need are also aware of other resources available for them on campus, such as the store, which is a student-run food <a href=\"https:\/\/students.gwu.edu\/store\">pantry<\/a> providing resources for students experiencing food insecurity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cthe students who come to the store know that the loop exists,\u201d carvalho said. \u201cwe\u2019re just cross-promoting the resources.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>besides being open every friday, carvalho said they open the loop at different times to specific student groups who would benefit from having extra time to look around for clothes they need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cwe really wanted to create an experience where students would feel excited about coming in and getting their clothes,\u201d carvalho said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>the loop, an affordable and sustainable clothing exchange, recently opened on george washington university\u2019s mount vernon campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20262,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4900,4914],"tags":[],"storyfest_categories":[],"class_list":["post-43403","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-green-living","category-sustainability"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- this site is optimized with the yoast seo plugin v24.0 -
